Employment Screening for the Engineering Industry
The Engineering Industry has special demands when it comes to background screening for engineering applicants, especially those which require security clearances. Aside from a standard criminal record search, additional screening requirements often include verification of engineering licensure, education and degree verification, and also government watch database searches.

Contract Employees
Many large engineering firms are moving towards a new type of work force by increasing contract employees to up to 20% of total employee makeup. Especially in technological fields, the use of contract employees is growing. These positions are often filled by engineering and technical staffing firms. Crimcheck specializes in engineering background checks for staffing firms, and we are aware of the specialized needs that affect their hiring processes, such as:
- Quick turnaround time
- Government clearance watch lists
- Accurate, easy to read reporting
Engineering Licensure
Professional Engineer – PE
Because the requirements are stringent and because there are some exemptions that allow engineers to work under the supervision of a PE, not all engineers become licensed.
Engineers who offer their services directly to the public must be licensed. These licensed engineers are called Professional Engineers (PE).
To become licensed one must have a degree from a program that is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), four years of relevant work experience, and successful completion of a state examination. Requirements vary by state. If your position requires professional engineering licensure, Crimcheck can verify the PE license status.
Education Verification
It is extremely important to verify your engineering candidate’s credentials and degree are not only authentic but from accredited organizations.
Degrees from engineering colleges accredited by ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering & Technology)
Specialization – The candidate earns degrees from specific academic curricula.
- Mechanical Engineers
- Electrical Engineers
- Chemical Engineers
- Civil Engineers
- Structural Engineers
- Industrial Engineers
Additionally, there are other specialty engineering degrees which can be obtained including aeronautics, nuclear and computer engineering.

Annual/Periodic Screening
The annual or ongoing background check process is being adopted by many employers, especially in professional fields that require licensing.
A repeat background check can be activated by an event or an annual date. The date of hire, traffic accident, altercation, or investigation can all be triggers for repeat of a background check.

Engineering Employment Facts
As of 2016, there were 1.68 million people employed in the US as engineers. That number is expected to increase by 139,300 by 2026.
Engineering Job Outlook
In general, engineering employment is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2020, although outlook will vary by branch.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that environmental engineers will experience growth. This will be faster than the average for all occupations while biomedical engineers will experience growth. Civil, petroleum, geological and mining engineering will grow as fast as the average and industrial engineering will grow slower.
