Rhode Island State Background Check Laws

Rhode Island House Bill 5507 (2013), which was signed into law in July 2013, prohibited both public and private employers from requesting the criminal background of job applicants until they are given their first interview, with the exception of certain positions where a criminal record may be disqualifying.

Providence, RI

In April 2009, the City made a procedural change to its hiring policies, banning-the-box on City job applications. Candidates only sign background check waivers allowing a criminal background check if they are determined to meet the minimum criteria for the position.

Cities Include: Providence, Cranston, Warwick, Pawtucket, East Providence, Woonsocket and more.
